Autumn has arrived, although you wouldn't know it in Colorado, where the summer heat hangs on. Still we get ready, straddling the margin between "what has been" and "what may come," between the heat and leisure of summer and the inevitable cold and effort of winter.
As the days shorten, we watch our horses change: the sleek coats of summer begin to give way to fuzzy winter coats. We notice the new that has emerged in the past year - the limps, the compensating behaviors, the reduced movement and other signs of pain. We project what we see now into the coming winter, and we assess how they will they do when it's below zero and the ground is frozen and covered with ice and snow.
This year, sadly, that assessment led us to conclude that our old, retired, farm horse, Zoey, who has been hurting this summer from chronic arthritis, was just too disabled to contemplate putting her through another Colorado winter. She'd reached the state where, even in the warm sunshine, she was unable to lay down. In September, we made the hard but right choice to let her go.
Movements
That necessary choice for Zoey was definitely a damper on our Autumn of 2026, but it came in the midst of God's good and fruitful movement in our family and our ministry.
Much effort and attention this Fall has been directed toward the new church plant we are a part of. Bethany Anglican is now meeting on Sundays for worship with over 100 men, women and children coming together in a new community of Jesus followers. And for us, that brings the invitation and opportunity to forge new relationships, make new friends, and embrace all that God is doing, for us and for the community, in this new member of the Body of Christ.
The timing couldn't be more perfect, because both of us, Christy and Mark, are settling into new rhythms of life -- rhythms of semi-retirement, where our ministry work is the only "job" we have. This season without "day jobs" has given us space to lean into not only the opportunities at Bethany Anglican, but also into the goodness that God has for us in our marriage, in our extended family, and in the deep friendships that bring richness and joy to our lives. In this vein, Christy will be doing some traveling this Fall to invest time and presence in some of those relationships, and that is definitely a blessing.
On the ministry front, our administrative efforts have been focused on simplifying and shrinking our organizational overhead. We've transitioned to a less expensive and more compact giving platform, and by the end of the year, we plan to dissolve our limited liability nonprofit corporation and restructure our ministry under a new corporate umbrella that is tuned to support small operations like ours. Making this change will allow us to reduce our overhead and focus on the delivery of care and discipleship to men, women and families.
Our spiritual direction practice grows, little by little, as new directees come our way and as others move on in their journey with Jesus. Between the two of us, we now have more than 40 spiritual direction clients, and we are, on average, doing around 10 hours of direction each week. We have begun to see a number of new referrals from mentors and counselors who know us and are steering new clients to our practice.
Our work with parents and family members of LGBTQ-identified loves ones continues to flourish. Our two parent support groups reached their two-year anniversaries this month; we've been meeting together since October of 2024. In September, Mark was invited to present a training class for Deacons in the Anglican Diocese of the Rocky Mountains regarding care and ministry to family members of LGBTQ persons.
God remains faithful to pour out his love and care through Redeemed Seasons, blessing not only those who come to us for care and discipleship, but also blessing Mark and Christy through the ways in which He uses Redeemed Seasons to stretch and form and grow us as apprentices to Jesus (using language from Dallas Willard).
